KATHMANDU, April 22: Demanding eight seats in the Constituent Assembly (CA) and representation of the Dalit community in the cabinet, the United National Dalit Rights Movement (UNDRM) has declared to stage protests.
A joint meeting of political parties, civil society, organizations, journalist, and social workers held on Tuesday has also forwarded a six-point demand that include leadership of the Dalit community on the Constitution Drafting Committee.
Other demands include equal representation of the Dalit community in various constitutional bodies like the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Commission on Enforced Disappearance, diplomatic missions and other government agencies.
Likewise, the NDRM has also demanded inclusion of pro-Dalit provisions that was agreed by the previous CA, guarantee of basic human rights for the Dalit community, their proportional representation, social justice and the federal system that ensure equal participation of Dalit community in all state mechanisms with proper compensation.
To make the National Dalit Commission powerful, the NDRM has also demanded to pass a bill regarding the formation of National Dalit Commission (NDC) immediately. The movement has also demanded implementation of Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability Act-20011 and take legal action against the guilty involved in the series of discriminatory violence.
Coordinator of the protest program, Bhakta Bishwokarma said that the UNDRM has been planning to meet Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to inform him about their demands and protest programs. The UNDRM has warned to wage stern protest programs if their demands are not met within a week.
Speaking at the meeting, Durga Shob, chairman of Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO), said that the protest will be continued until the representation of Dalit community in various constitutional bodies like diplomatic missions, constitutional bodies, and government agencies is ensured. She also demanded equal representation of the Dalit community in the 26 CA seats members for which is to be nominated by the cabinet.
