FEDO Nepal, along with different networks and organizations, organized a rally on the occasion of 104th International Women’s Day. The International slogan of this year is ‘Equality for Women is Progress for all’ whereas the national slogan of this year is, ‘let’s gather Together from Home to Constitution Assembly’. Women’s day is the day when women are recognized for their achievements regardless of their differences, i.e. their nationality, ethnicity, linguistic, cultural or any economic or political background they belong to. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
The Government of Nepal has made a number of commitments at the international level to insure the equality between men and women and the violence against women by ratifying international human rights instruments, including the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
In other side, the legal measures are far from being straightforward. The patriarchal socio-cultural order, lack of education among adult women and legal loopholes are the barriers against women’s easy access to what is rightfully theirs. Dalit women have to face double the amount of discrimination, as they are effectively paying the price of being born, first, as women and second, into an untouchable class. As their access to legal instrument is weak, these completely disempowered women are often victims of vicious physical assaults and rapes. This present picture of the status of women in the country indicates that, Nepal still has a long and far way to go to get the gender balance rights and dalit rights. Keeping this in mind, Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO) is restlessly working for eliminating the gender and cast based discrimination by organizing various activities such as: rally, campaign, capacity building program, study/research, networking, advocacy etc.
In this context, Feminist Dalit Organization accomplished a rally on the occasion of the International Women’s day, in coordination with National Woman Commission, Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare and other organizations. It began at 8:00 A.M with a march of more than 1000 people chanting slogans and carrying placards from Bhrikuti Mandap, Putalisadak, Bagbajar, Ratnapark, Bhadrakali, Sahidgate, Newroad and finally Basantpur which ended with public speech program by the Secretary of Ministry of Women Children and Social Welfare, Mr. Dinesh Adhikari and Chair Person of National Women Commission Ms. Sekh Chand Tara.
